While it’s unsurprising to find jewel-bright butterflies flitting from flower to flower, there’s another place you might find them: in your dreams. For the Blackfeet people, the butterfly is the bringer of good dreams, and Blackfeet/Piikani artist and Inspired Natives® Collaborator John Isaiah Pepion has brought butterflies to rest on his beautiful silk twill scarf.
John drew inspiration from the butterfly designs that fly across the rawhide parfleche designs of the Plains Indians. Traditional parfleche are beautifully embellished rawhide containers, decorated by painting, incising, or both. Our Butterfly Dreams Silk Scarf is woven in a two-sided design for rich, all-over color and is made from 100% silk twill.
A note on the fabric: these silk scarves are made from 100% silk twill. Silk is the fiber; twill is the weave structure: the twill weave makes the fabric more durable than plain weave silk, and a bit less slippery than some silk scarves. Our silk twill scarves still have the same lightness and coolness you expect from silk, with a luxurious and elegant drape.
