You can walk, trot, or canter: but nothing beats a gallop. Imagine you lean low over your pony, gripping his mane as the prairie winds stream past. When all four of his hooves fly off the ground and the two of you soar together, you're neither human nor horse: you're joined together as an elemental force, the whipping wind made hoof and bone.
Your morning cup of coffee might not be that exhilarating, but you can still greet your day at a gallop with our Pony Express Mug designed by Piikani/Blackfeet artist John Isaiah Pepion. Racing across a satiny black ceramic mug, this herd of horses pays tribute to the horse culture of John's Plains people.
“Horses were vital to the Plains way of life,” says John. “Hunting, war, traveling—we used horses for all of it. Horses often appeared on traditional ledger art as part of the battle and hunting stories Blackfeet artists told, they were that important to our lifestyle.”
These horses are adapted from John's original work of art, Pony Express. In his Pony Express Fine Art Print ten blue horses streak across a page of antique silk ledger paper from a Virginia City courier log dated 1891. John is known internationally as one of the premier contemporary ledger artists working today.
